Site of the Last Indian War in the United States. In September of 1898 an Indian leader named Bug-ah-na-ghe-shig was ordered to testify concerning illicit liquor sales. He refused citing that he had been ill treated the year before when asked to testify in Duluth. Initially Federal Marshals and then National Guard troops were sent from Walker, Minnesota, across Leech Lake to arrest him. A band of his followers defended him. In a series of battles from October 5 to 7, 1898 six soldiers were killed. The Indians suffered no casualties.
