These were amateur fights, men in varying states of fitness willing and hoping to validate their manhood for prize money. Some had boxing trunks and shoes other fought in street clothes and shoes. It was not unusual to see confidence surprised by a strong blow.
Of course the spectators were partisan, eager to support their fighter.
